Community Projects:

NAS SWIMMING POOL - 2016

Craig and Audrey Takamine and some of our crew volunteered their labor for a project coordinated by the county Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma.

The deteriorated roof of the swimming faciity was in need of replacement for more than 20 years, said Hilo Councilman Dennis “Fresh” Onishi, who appropriated funds from his district contingency account to purchase materials for the project.

The NAS Swimming Pool offers water exercise and fitness classes for adults, learn-to-swim classes for adults and keiki, a novice swim team and junior lifeguard tryouts.

In addition, many schools and organizations will begin using the pool when classes begin in August.

This summer, the NAS pool provided classes to more than 140 adults and 300 children.

Mauna Kea State Recreation Playground - 2015

Takamine Consruction, Inc. along with General contractor Site Engineering Inc., built the unique playground designed for keiki 5 to 12 years old. It utilizes a system of ropes, rails, spinning apparatus, and climbing ladders to emphasize balance and movement. To protect the children from falls, the playground also features a padded safety surface protected by a synthetic-turf covering that resembles natural grass.

Hawai‘i County has invested more than $4 million building new playgrounds around the island since Mayor Kenoi took office in December 2008. Additional playground construction is planned in the near future.

The playground is open daily at the park located near 34-mile marker of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

Friends of Panaewa Zoo Playground - "New Playground"

As soon as Craig had heard that the zoo needed help, he knew that he wanted to be a part of the project. Craig and employees donated their time and company's services to prepare the site and lay the concrete foundation for the park.

"According to zoo complex manager Pam Mizuno, putting in a playground at the 43-year-old zoo has long been on her to-do list. But, she said, money was always a roadblock for the project. "

"This is one of the few free facilities that kids can take advantage of here," he said, "so when they said it would be a playground, I knew I wanted to be a part of it even more so. ... It's a project near and dear to my heart, because it's going to benefit thousands of kids. I have two kids, and we take them to the zoo all the time."

Takamine added that he wanted to give all credit to his employees who gave their time to work on the project.

"Without our employees volunteering to do it, there's no way this could have happened. I really appreciate the amount of time they put in. ... It just goes to show that, living in Hilo, we may live in a small community, but when it's the right community, people will get behind it and get it done," he said.

Takamine also thanked partner companies who donated their time and services, including Infinity Pumping, Loeffler Construction, Island Wide Concrete Pumping, Rannikks Auto Specialists and Bob's Fencing
